Welcome to Your Dream Compromise – an Old House in the Middle of Nowhere!
This house, built in 1980, offers exactly what you’d expect from a forty-year-old home: slightly slanted floors, outdated solutions, and some surprising interior choices. There’s no unnecessary luxury here!
The heart of the cabin is the legendary fireplace room – without a fireplace. But don’t worry, you can still create a cozy atmosphere with a led lights and some wool socks. The two bedrooms offer surprisingly decent sleep if you enjoy unusual sleeping angles. Additionally, there’s an extra bed for two, perfect for those who don’t mind sacrificing a bit of comfort.
The cabin includes a toilet and shower, bringing a touch of modern luxury to this nostalgic retreat. The kitchen has everything you need for cooking—assuming the electricity stays on and someone is willing to cook.
And of course, a wood-heated sauna, because what would a Finnish getaway be without hot steam and a cool reality check afterward?
The cabin’s location is strategic: one kilometer from Lake Oulujärvi, but not on the shore (since waterfront properties are for people with money). It’s a 17 km to Rokua National Park, which is the perfect distance if you want to combine a cabin holiday with an extreme hiking challenge. Additionally, the cabin is part of the Rokua Geopark, where the beauty of nature and geological history serve as a reminder that time marches on relentlessly—just like this house.
But don’t worry, nature makes up for what the cabin lacks! In the morning, you’ll be woken by birdsong – or alternatively, by the neighbor’s ATV, depending on the day. The surrounding forest offers endless opportunities to get lost and find yourself again. And if the day has gone too smoothly, you can gaze at the night sky and contemplate the vast emptiness of the universe. With no light pollution, you have a great chance to witness a breathtaking starry sky, and with some luck, even the magical northern lights.
The yard is the real pride of the cottage: a huge lawn area, where you can enjoy summer days, play Finnish yard games like mölkky, or simply watch the grass grow as life passes by. If it happens to rain (and in Finland, it will), you can seek shelter in the old storehouse from the 1950s, which serves as a covered party space, a meditation retreat, or simply a place to wonder why someone built a warehouse here in the first place.
Right next to the cabin is the culturally and historically significant Jylhämä hydropower plant area, designed by renowned Finnish architect Aarne Ervi. The old buildings and residential houses reflect 1950s architecture and tell the story of Finland’s electrification era – a reminder of a time when buildings were made to last.
If staying put makes you restless, the host offers kayaks, canoes, electric fat bikes, and traditional fat bikes and in winter skinbased snow skies for rent. In other words, you can explore the waters, ride the sandy ridges, slide in snow or just admire the equipment and question your ambitions when booking them.
This cabin may not shine with luxury, but it certainly shines in sustainability! The Sustainable Travel Finland label guarantees that this place operates in harmony with nature—meaning nothing is demolished but instead left to live on in its own charming way. Recycling is an essential part of cabin life: everything is sorted carefully, and nothing goes to waste—except perhaps hope, occasionally.
Best of all, here you can experience "Live like a local" firsthand! This is not just accommodation—it’s a journey into authentic Finnish life. You’ll see how ordinary Finns live, wash your laundry in the sauna, ponder the mystery of toilet paper consumption, and wonder how changing a single lightbulb can turn into a three-day project.
If you dream of a perfect vacation, this might not be for you. But if you enjoy life’s little imperfections, the romantic patina of rust, ironic surprises, and sustainable travel, welcome!
Pets are also welcome at Pikku-Koski!
